About the Course
Emergency Care for Aquatic Personnel provides the latest evidence-based treatment guidelines customized for the aquatic setting. An integrated, holistic approach to teaching these critical skills allows students to learn the material more thoroughly and at a higher level than they would learn each skill in isolation or outside of the aquatic setting. The unique online delivery mechanism allows students to learn at their own pace and on their own schedule, reviewing concepts as many times as necessary in order to master them. The result is a student who is thoroughly prepared to practice and test for certification in the four key emergency care competencies.
Emergency Care for Aquatic Personnel prepares students to receive the four key emergency care certifications. This course integrates first aid, CPR and AED for the professional rescuer, bloodborne pathogen training, and emergency oxygen preparation into one course that uses specific examples from aquatics to prepare students for situations they will face in real life. After taking this course, students will be prepared to practice and test for certification through the internationally recognized Starfish Aquatics Institute and the American Safety and Health Institute. This course is complemented by the book Emergency Care.

Table of Contents
Unit 1 teaches about bloodborne pathogens and specifically highlights how to prevent disease transmission in the pool. Unit 2 introduces basic first aid concepts and universal first aid procedures. It discusses the steps of emergency response and how to handle specific situations such as heat- and cold-related illness; bleeding and shock; sudden illness; and limb, spine, and head injuries. Unit 3 discusses basic life support, including rescue breathing, the proper use of CPR and AEDs for both one and two rescuers, use of a bag mask, and emergency action steps for choking. Unit 4 covers emergency oxygen procedures, including how to assemble, handle, and maintain an emergency oxygen system and how to administer emergency oxygen.
The course is scenario based and asks students to put themselves in the role of the rescuer. Since specific aquatic examples are used, students will role-play scenarios they might one day encounter on the job. Interactive activities are present throughout the course, including a virtual CPR activity. A practice test at the end of the course allows students to assess their knowledge and allows instructors to confirm time spent learning these skills.
Emergency Care for Aquatic Personnel is a new and unique way to train aquatic professionals in the four key areas of emergency care. The online delivery of this course allows students to arrive at the certification site fully prepared to practice and test, which will save valuable training time and money. Students and instructors alike will appreciate the scenario-based, interactive, holistic approach to teaching these essential skills.
